tiny happy

making journal

Here’s a rough pattern and guide for making a shoulder bag like one of these, as promised. These are really easy to make, and I always have so much fun choosing fabrics and buttons for them. I have to warn you however that i’m not very good at explaining things in words, so I hope you can understand my general meaning in these directions! Please email me if you need further instruction, and I’ll be happy to help! I couldn’t work out how to do a PDF file so this is a very basic and d-i-y version of a pattern! As you can see, I’ve drawn a tiny, rough and very much NOT-to-scale outline of the pattern which you will need to draw to the proper measurements yourself on some tracing paper or a piece of newspaper. It doesn’t matter if it’s not quite right, as long as it’s symmetrical. The entire length of the pattern is 28 inches. This will make a bag that’s a good size for your wallet, keys and a few books, but it’s easy to make it a bit deeper or the strap a bit longer, if you wish. Just add a couple of extra inches. Umm, and that measurement on the strap should say 18". Sorry about that.

Pattern

Once you’ve drawn and cut out your pattern, cut two from your chosen bag fabric, and two from your lining fabric. I usually use recycled fabrics- old curtains, blankets, vintage bits and pieces… but you could use anything that takes your fancy. Something fairly sturdy for the outside works best though. After cutting these out, I also cut a pocket for the inside, I use some of the outer fabric for this, cut into a rectangle about 8" X 6.5". Then I cut a strip measuring 5" X 1.5" to make a loop with which to fasten the bag to a button, if you choose to use this method. You could also make two ties to fasten, or use velcro or a snap fastener.

1. Start with your outer bag pieces. Place right sides together, and sew the seams at each edge, between the *s on the pattern, like this:

Step1

2. Then open out the piece so that the seams are at the front and back of the bag. Sew along the bottom seam.

Step2

3. Then square off the corners by pinching each one out, then sewing straight across about an inch from the corner’s edge. Trim excess.

Step3

4. Repeat these steps with the lining pieces, but remember to leave a gap in the bottom seam, for turning inside-out later on.

Step4

5. Overlock or zig-zag the top edge of your pocket. Press the edge down about half an inch, and top-stitch. Then press your pocket half an inch all around. Pin to the outside of the lining where you would like it, and stitch it down.

Step6

6. Make your loop for the button. Press in both edges of the strip towards the centre, then fold in half and press again. Sew the edges together (this is just like a bias strip.)

Step7

7. Now sew the lining and outer pieces together. Place one inside the other, right sides together. Match centre seams, and pin. Insert your loop between the two layers on one side of the bag, so the ends of the loop are sticking out, and pin it securely.

Pinning

8. Sew about 1/4" from the edge, all along both sides of the bag, right up to the top edges.

Sewing

9. Now clip like mad around the curved edges, nearly to the seam.

Clipping

10. Turn the bag right-way-out through the gap in the lining. Now press all around the edges of the bag where you have sewn, so that both layers ‘sit’ nicely. Trim the tops of the straps so they’re even and of equal length.

Pressandtrim

11. Sew the top of the strap together- at just the outer pieces. Place right sides together, and sew a 1/4" seam. (This is a bit fiddly under the machine, but it’s okay.) Press down. Then tuck in the lining pieces at this point and hand-stitch it closed.

Handsew

9. Press the strap again and if you are happy with everything, top-stitch a 1/4" seam all around the edges of the bag. Hand-sew the gap in the lining closed. And hand-sew a big button on the front of the bag, in such a position so the loop will fit nicely around it.

Button

10. Ta Da! Enjoy your new bag! I’m off to eat this chocolate.

Chocolate

p.s. please email me a picture if you try this out because I’d love to see it! Also, this is my first time doing instructions like these, so please let me know if I need to make corrections. Thanks!

Thank you so very much for posting this very simple yet beautiful pattern for a shoulderbag. Right now I am teaching summer camp and I was searching the web for projects for the the kids. The kids got very excited when I showed them what the finished bag looked like. They started their bags today and will hopefully all be finished by Friday afternoon. The class meets M-W-F afternoons. Most of the students have never used a sewing machine before, so it’ll take them a couple of days to finish this project. I’ll post photos of their finished begs by next week!

Thank you for the bag tutorial so much! I had saved it so that it would pop up and remind me everyday until I made it. So today it’s finished–I love it and it was much fun to make. Had to piece some of the fabric for the outside – ended up being blue ticking stripes with wide red stripes in the middle. The inside is blue and white toile. Thanks!

This is lovely! I whipped up one for my niece and she’s been wearing it around everywhere.
I think if I were to make it again I’d try tweaking the sewing for the top of the strap, using a method I picked up from a tutorial on Craftster for a singlet-style reusable shopping bag. On one side of the strap you sew all the way to the end, but on the other side you leave a good gap open–about 1 1/2 to 2 inches–and then when you turn the bag right side out, you can sew the two bits of the strap together (it’s rather like a C-shape under the machine), then close the resulting gap with topstitching. I’m not explaining very well, but the tutorial is here:
    http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=177482.0
I’ll let you know how it goes.

you did a good job on that handbag. Looks like you bought it from the store. I didn’t realize how easy it is to make a handbag. On the other hand you save lots of money making your own instead of spending lots of money on something that you don’t even like that much. I made my first handbag. I was impressed with myself. it came out really cute. now all my friends are like wow can you make me one. so i’m thinking hmmmmmmm maybe i should sale handbags.lol.. its lots of fun and you can express your personality . On top of that you will have something that no one else has. so it will be special.

This is a great tutorial, I wanted one of these bags and was going to try to make it in four pieces, which would have been much harder. How would you recommend adding a zipper closure?

Hi Melissa, your blog has been a lovely escape during wet school holidays in Nelson. I’ve just finished the shoulder bag made from material I’ve had for about 15 years and never quite made anything with – purple cord and mauve tartan lining. Its cute. Thanks very much.

This was the first thing I’ve ever made on a sewing machine!
The tutorial was nice and easy but I did have probles with getting the stitches on the inside. I got confused by how I was meant to turn it inside out and such. So my bag ended up having the stitching on the
    outside.
Maybe it’s just me, I’m dead special like that. 🙂
Thanks anyway, it was really fun!

This is just the bag pattern I have been looking for. It does look really easy and I have a lot of different pieces of clothe because I quilt too. I may even quilt the outside of the bag. I can’t wait to give it a try. Thank you!

I made the bag tonight and I love it. I think unknowingly I created a little bit different look. I forgot to sew the straps together to make just one long strap, so I just tie the straps together at the top and I still love it. The straps are still long enough so it fits right. Thank you for this easy to follow pattern.

hi great tutorial i just tried it and it came out wrong but i do plan to re-do it in a few hours altering the measurements i mis-understood the diagram between the 4.5″ and 3.5″ strap because if it was equal than 4.5 + 4.5 + 3.5 would equal the bottom which is 17 but it ends up equalling 12.5 so i had a few inches extar in the front making the strap turn out on the back of the bag and well it was just a mess… but i will try again & probably on a bigger scale for a school bag. just though you should know your diagram was a bit off.

thanks for the lovely bag tutorial! i’m terrible at sewing, mostly using my machine for hemming trousers and skirts. but when i saw this tutorial, i tried it straight away! i had some great batik fabric i picked up in malaysia and a little polished stone to use instead of a button. i had a few mishaps, but overall it worked quite well … thanks!

    Hello
Today I found your instructions for the bag, and I have spent ages making it, cos I am not a seamstress!! Anyway your instructions were good, and I have made the bag. I got in a tangle turning it right way out, and twisted the handle when sewing it together….I told you I was not very good at this sort of thing. I am on a mission to turn all my fabrics I have kept “Just in case” into bags, to distribute to my friends to help them in our national quest not to use plastic bags.
    Best wishes
