Concert 2

Concert 3

Concert 1

On the weekend, we held a little concert for the children to perform some of the music they've learned this year in their piano and violin lessons with my Mum. All the cousins, grandparents and great-grandparents came along to listen. And then after all the hard work of playing, we ate some sweet things to celebrate. There was lemon and cherry cake, coconut rough and elderflower cordial. (My family has rather a sweet tooth.)

Arlo asked me to make one of his favourite sweet things: chocolate slice- and I was pleased to rediscover this old and easy recipe in my scrapbook. Thought I'd share it here, too, in case you feel like celebrating something.

Piano Concert Chocolate Slice.

Melt together in a heavy-based saucepan: 200 grams butter, 1/2 tin condensed milk, 3 Tb cocoa powder, and 1 tsp vanilla extract. Then remove from the heat and add: 1 packet of plain store-bought biscuits, crushed with a rolling pin, 1 cup coconut, 1/2 cup sultanas or other chopped, dried fruit.

Mix everything together well and press into a shallow tray or oven dish that has been lined with greaseproof paper. Refrigerate until set and ice with chocolate icing, or keep uniced. After a few hours, you can lift out the slice and cut it into small triangles.

Such simple pleasures, Melissa. My son just started violin this Fall. He loves it, and his teacher makes such a fuss over him. I think it is so important to introduce children to music and music making. Your children will remember their little “concerts,” and look back on them with fond memories.

Hi Melissa, really enjoying your blog. So far our little boy’s music (at 10 months old) extends to tambourine bashing at Music and Movement. The family performance looks like a lovely idea : )

I can’t imagine anything better for a child than to learn music from their grandmother. What a wonderful (and sweet!) family gathering.

Beautiful! The chocolate slice recipe looks so delicious and I really love the way the first photo is composed!
We have a lot of musicians in our extended family so we throw family concerts whenever we get together and the children like making their own programs for them.

What a civilized sounding afternoon (and look at that beautiful posture at the piano)! It deserves chocolate slice, for sure.

What a lovely day! I played the piano when I was little and although I hardly ever do now, I never forget and it also taught me a great love for listening live performances every time I have the chance. Yummy cake recipe too! x

Looks like a lovely afternoon! Coconut is my one and only food allergy. I sometimes feel I must be missing out on something wonderful. My 4-year-old picked out a book on violins and other stringed instruments the other day. I’ll admit I was a little excited.

What a lovely idea to hold a concert for your family. Your chocolate slice is very similar to the one and only dessert my husband makes – chocolate biscuit cake. Uh oh – now I want some really badly.

    Hi Melissa!
I made this recipe, thank you for sharing it 🙂
Mine were much less dark, I used levelled spoonfuls of cocoa, perhaps that’s it?
I’m still exploring the delights of New Zealand’s sweet recipes.
