Extra 1

This is an Antipodean-style summer wreath I made a while ago as a project for Extra Curricular magazine, the fourth issue of which has just now arrived in local bookshops here. Extra Curricular is a beautifully-produced little book put together by Ellie in Auckland, (I was lucky enough to be featured in the first edition) and this issue comes with an extra little booklet of holiday activities. The wreath I made originally (from branches and leaves of the bottle brush tree, before it flowered, and a paua shell and strawflowers for colour) has now rather dried out as its been hanging in a very sunny part of the house. But the branches now make a good frame for tucking new foliage and dried flowers into.

I wish you a happy and peaceful weekend. See you on Monday.

I got my copy last weekend, full of beautiful things, like your wreath. I’ve cut some of the neighbours wisteria and made it wreath shaped, hope the green stalks dry out by Christmas! Happy weekend melissa

Your wreath is absolutely beautiful. I keep meaning to sow everlasting flowers – they remind me of the seventies and I love their oranges and yellows and their slight rustle. The shell made me smile.
I made a little wreath yesterday too – with a tiny silver pinecone on it.

Congratulations, Melissa. It is a charming wreath that it is little wonder it featured.

So beautifully “you” Melissa. I think it would make a very pretty tiny happy embroidery too!
Like Emma, everlastings remind me of my childhood in the 70s. My mom had a big arrangement of them in an antique tin watering can (fitting right in with the pottery and macramé). But they’re impossible to find here now. I seem to remember that they’re fairly easy to grow. I may have to plant my own next summer.

I have had a large grapevine wreath that I put dried hydrangea flowers in years ago that I still stick new flowers in..works well when others fall out hehe

Lovely wreath. The magazine looks fun, wish it were easier to get in the US.

And available online in Australia from http://onabee.bigcartel.com/product/extra-curricula-zine – Yay! (I always miss out on the cool NZ crafty zines because I so often don’t even know they exist until they go out of print – so thanks for the heads up)
My family are visiting from NZ for Christmas this year and I love the idea of a NZ christmas wreath on my front door… might have to settle for using Wattle branches, though.
