I got out the ceramic paints a while back, and worked on these tea cups in black, mustard yellow, and green. A few little winter trees and some dandelions. I put them in my felt shop, which I don't think I've mentioned before, but I opened it with the intention of listing some more locally-themed work, such as native flower brooches, hot water bottle covers (since it's so darn freezing here right now, and I hear hot water bottles are rather an Antipodean thing?) and the ceramics, because they tend to cost such a lot to post overseas. International customers can still shop at felt, though- it's a bit like a NZ version of etsy.

Also today, I found these very beautiful little seed pods when I was hanging out the washing. The seeds that remain clinging inside the shells are black and sticky. I'm not sure what the name of the tree is, but there is one overhanging our washing line, which is not ideal as the seeds stick to and stain the clean clothes. I still like the shape of them though, and the pearly blackness of them.

So yesterday I mentioned that I had some changes coming up. This marks the end of an era for me, because next week I am about to begin full-time study again. I have enrolled in a post-grad journalism course, and feel excited to be embarking on this fairly new path. It's been 10 years (or more- eek!) since I finished my last year at University, and going back to learn more has always been at the back of my mind. Living here in the capital has presented the chance to really do it. Also, now that the children are a bit older, the time seems right.

If I'm really honest, I don't think I'm as creatively inspired as I once was a few years ago and I think that has been reflected here in this space. I also have a desire to be able to financially support my family on my own, should I ever need to, and I've realised that I'm no businesswoman. I have no interest in building up my own enterprise. What I have liked most over the past few years has been the writing and creative 'making.'

I have absolutely loved blogging here for the past 5 or 6 years and will miss my daily habit dearly. I've also REALLY loved making things for my job, and writing about them. I intend to continue both writing here and making things for my etsy shop, but probably more on an occasional basis. Maybe once a week or two, if time allows.

THANK YOU to everyone who has supported me, visited this blog and left messages and written emails. Thank you to all the lurkers, too. And thank you to all the wonderful friends I've met via the online world. I can't tell you how happy this life has made me.

See you back here every now and then.

Those seedpods! The bane of my life while living in Island Bay, so many stains on the washing. Some kind of pittosporum I believe.
Good luck with the study and new lifestyle, sounds like a good plan.

Great move! I have almost finished my first semester back at part time study and hope to move full time in a few years once my kids are a little older. Scary after not studying for so long but great to have the mind ticking away in a different kind of way! I’m sure you’ll love it. Will miss your regular creativity and inspiration here but wish you all the best. Lucy @ motherwho x

I’m one of those lurkers probably :-). I’ve been enjoying your blog for a year or so now, and have been inspired to open my own felt shop & try selling some things at markets- so thank you!
I love those seed pods too, the three sided symmetry (is there such a thing?)found some stuck to the floor of the car the other day though, curses.
Good luck with the new & exciting change!

Congratulations, exciting news for you Melissa (my Dad is/was a journalist).
I love this space and hope selfishly that you don’t disappear completely! The blogging world would be so much poorer without you and your lovely eye.
Perhaps you can practice your journalism on us 🙂

Even today in an op shop I was thinking of you while I looked at bark cloth, doilies, hand embroidered tray cloths. You see you have my eye trained to look at cast off household linens in a new way.

Well, Melissa, I think it’s a good thing to change your way to walk on. I’am not sure to find the right words to explain it, but I did twice in my life, yet. It was ever a good choice even if it’s sometimes difficult to assume.
I am really happy for you, and I will come and look for news about your new adventure here very often.
Yesterday I paintend a pink bird and thought about the one you painted a rainy day.
Bye and love, LN from France.

All the best Melissa, I think it’s a bit of a theme for us mums. Especially if you have stayed at home for years with the kids. I’m doing a masters part time and looking at full time work now. Hubby got made redundant a few months ago and I chose to work and he’s full time at Uni. It has been the best decision. I am so happy studying and working. I hope you find it exhilarating and revitilising. I hope you find the time to keep blogging a bit and let us know how you get on with the course. If you are at Victoria I hope you find it as good as I have. All the best.

Great, Melissa! Good luck with all your studying.. I did post-grads at 27 and then at 40, and found them the best because I wanted to do it and also was better at balancing study/life than I was in my earlier years.. I have loved discovering your blog and ‘meeting’ you through it – you’ve been an inspiration. This sounds like an ideal chance to ‘grow’. Best wishes, Caireen x

Wonderful news re: your study, Melissa – you will make a wonderful journalist. I love your blog, but I also understand how things have cycles and enthusiasms wax and wane…all the best with the course. Do you have to learn shorthand?? I know Fraser did when he did that course, but maybe journalists don’t use it any more with all the news and easy ways to record speech…anyway, tangent! Wishing you all the best, girl, you’re awesome! 🙂 xx Helen

Hot water bottles are still pretty big in the UK too – in fact, the weather is so blah here at the moment (yup, it should be summer but someone forgot to tell the weather gods) that I wouldn’t be surprised if I get my hottie out of the cupboard again any day now!!

It’s great you decided to do what you wanted most! I missed my chance of doing a postgraduate degree twenty years ago and I still miss it and feel sorry I didn’t try even later! Now it is too late and I am in the mood for starting creating and an etsy shop but still have a full-time job( I am a teacher of Englsih and love it!) but I am not a bussinesswoman either!
I always admired your talent of making simple things that sell well! I wish you all the best in your new path and hope to be seeing you from time to time in blogland as I am sure your new experiences will be interesting for us all, too!

Melissa, thank you for sharing (some) of your daily life here for so long. I have been reading since just before you were in Norway, so a while now! I will miss your regular bursts of gentle creativity, and glimpses into another country and culture which is similar, but different, to mine in the UK. I wish you the very best for your studies, and hope they lead you to something satisfying in a new life stage. By the way, although it is nearly mid-summer here, it has been raining like Noah’s time, and my hottie is still in use because it’s not warm.
PS;, still hoping for a coat pattern some time in the future!
