This is New Zealand is a Garden by Joyce Blake. I was sent a copy by Deb earlier this month, who found it second-hand and thought I might like it. The book was published in 1982 (I've since discovered that the author is Sir Peter Blake's mother) and features sketches and paintings of plants around New Zealand- the locations are a bit random (Northland, Takaka, Wellington, Te Awamutu, Moeraki and a few others) which makes it all the more appealing, I think. Like a proper holiday trip around the place. Deb kindly marked the pages she thought I might especially like.

The fishing hut in Whagaruru (second-to-last picture above) is my favourite: corrugated iron structure with orange tarpaulin roof and casual woodcarving nearby. Deeply familiar though I've never been there.

Wow, beautiful. I have had that haunting feeling before of something being deeply familiar though you haven’t been there or seen it or done it before. You expressed it really beautifully.

Oh, I have one of Joyce’s books, it was my mother’s I never realised she was Peter’s mother! And I found a copy of Mrs Delany and her Flower Collages in the Richmond Hospice shop the other day and couldn’t believe my eyes! S:)

    Hi Melissa,
I’m enjoying your blog, as always, but particularly all the painted and collage florals of late. I have little natural skill with drawing. I have to focus very hard to make a picture. But, collage is more freeing, don’t you think? I find sewing is much easier for me – making something 3 dimensional. Not sure why that is. I have been making many more sewn animals over the past months. I have also started blog posting again, after a year and a half break!
Take care, and thanks for the continued inspiration.

This is a lovely book. There is another one by Joyce Blake called Auckland is a garden, published in 1980 which is just as beautiful.
