The iceblock obsession continues around here with recipe testing (me) and taste testing (children + friends.)

This latest batch was requested by Tom, who remembers eating pina colada pops when his family lived in Australia for a year when he was 10 years old. But he'd not seen them anywhere since. So I made these by whisking together equal parts coconut cream and pineapple juice. They're quite delicious: creamy and juicy at the same time.

The first photo above is a page in this beautiful old book that caught my eye. A tree filled with small birds of the palest blue and yellow, I wish we had one of those in our garden.

    Yum! We made some the other day with a blended can each of mango and coconut cream, they were lovely. Where did you get the moulds from Mel? I’ve been on the lookout for these but can’t seem to find them anywhere? xx

    I will have to mention pinapple/coconut to my DH when summer comes. We have an ice cream machine. at the moment we are back to freezing and cold winds.

    Oh delicious, I love anything with coconut. We have a few of those birds in our freezing garden at the moment looking for things to eat! We like to leave them a few crusts to help them along.

    Oh the blue tits!
    They are delightful little creatures, very lively and chirpy, but also a little smaller and have a bit more gentleness than big tits. They’ve been visiting my garden for months as this winter was very tough with lots of snow and we are helping them with generous amounts of sunflower seeds which they love.
    Come spring and summer they will remain around here much less visible in the green foliage but we know they are munching on the insects in the gardens and orchards…

    hi katherin,
    coconut cream is similar to the milk but is just a bit thicker, and creamier. the cream is made by blending the coconut flesh and milk, rather than just the milk from inside. hope that makes sense!

    Don’t you just love that book? When our children were born we made cards using images from it, from the month in which they were born. So that book has a special place in my heart. It’s just utterly romantic, I guess 🙂

    Where did you get the book? I pondered over buying a very similar looking book at Quilters Bookshop on Ghuznee st but ended up getting “The Flowers of Shakespeare” instead.

    As part of our OE in Asia I lived on smoothies 1/2 coconut and 1/2 pineapple, all the whilst trying to convince myself of their inherent healthiness but with the hunch I was missing something. I’ll never know for sure … but months later when I made a batch of Edmonds choc chip biscuits and took the obligatory lick of condensed milk…it all fell into place. Just wondering if your lot would enjoy such a minor corruption to the recipe!

    During feijoa season you must try making ice blocks from them if you can find some spare. Peel, then stew them up like you would apples, add lots of sugar and freeze. Omgee! My faves.

    Pina Colada pops/iceblocks…I’d never heard of those before. The only Pina Coladas I know are very alcoholic drinks :-). Your homemade ones sound lovely and refreshing!

    If that’s the book I think it is (Diary of an Edwardian Country Lady) I found it a little strange reading it as I know the area she writes about (I’m from not far from there and as a teen hung out around there) and how much it has changed since then!
