Rainy day

Rainy day 2

Rainy day 3

It's been about as wintry as it gets in these parts, so that's meant more knitting by the fire, more reading, more cosy times. Not such a bad thing really.

It seems that everyone needs a pair of slippers now, so that's been taking up a lot of my knitting time. The lightweight shawl, cardigan and socks on the needles have been put aside in favour of tweedy thick wool.

I have been making a few baby gifts (so many new babies in my circle of friends and family!) including reversible shoes in their own little drawstring pouch, for safekeeping when they no longer fit.

Other beautiful wintry things include long conversations and drinking red wine with friends, springs of daphne on the kitchen table, hearty soups (kumara and coconut milk being my current favourite) and a bit of late-night viewing: Tom and I are completely sucked into the Australian television series The Kettering Incident.

Hope this finds you well, dear reader.

That daphne looks and smells delightful. My vases have spring bulbs and camelias.
    Cheers from Newcastle, NSW

We are eagerly waiting for The Kettering Incident to be shown on free to air tv. It was filmed in our wonderful Tasmania…..they filmed a scene in an old defunct church about ten minutes drive from us.  Best wishes.

Can I ask some questions about the slippers? I’ve just knitted one on circular needles and found it hard-going knitting the toe – I actually made a bit of a botch of it because it was so tight. Do you start your slippers on straight needles and then switch to a circular or do you do something else? Maybe I need shorter circular needles? I’ve never used them before and not sure that I got the right ones. Everything was going fine… until the toe!

    Hi Pauline,
Im sorry youve been having trouble with the toe! After knitting the garter stitch section on straight needles, I then go on to double-point needles (rather than a circular) for the foot section. I imagine youd need a very small circular otherwise!
In the pattern, I think circular needles are mentioned, but they would only be useful if you were working the magic loop method for these slippers.
Ive actually answered a few other questions about the pattern, so feel free to enquire further!
    Hope that helps!

I love the cosiness of winter and it sounds like you have been making the most of every bit of it. Thanks for sharing your new favourite t.v. series, I think I could easily get hooked on The Kettering Incident too…
P.S. Your little baby shoes are by far the cutest, best fitting and practical baby shoes I have ever seen in all my time working in ECE. Love that they now have their own bag 🙂
