The children have been invited to a 'kings and queens' party on the weekend, so we've been doing a bit of research about possible costumes and gifts. The Head King and Queen are brother and sister, and celebrating their birthdays together in one party- so I made them these felt crowns for their dress-up box. I used a double-layer of wool felt and vintage buttons, some ribbon and a bit of hand embroidery too. Overall I was going for a woodsy, forest-y feel as I'm hoping to pair the crowns with a copy of this book that Arlo loves so much. The crowns are made to fit with some fabric-covered elastic at the back.
Wishing you a happy weekend – see you next week!

Simply gorgeous. I love the double-layer look (I wonder whether my sewing machine will make it through two layers of felt …) and the embroidery! A must.try.this.weekend.project:)!

Beautiful crowns! I was looking around too, trying to decide how to graphically distinguish between a queen’s crown and a king’s crown to describe bed sizes. I think I’ll just make the king pointier and the queen rounder – but your embroidery and layering are wonderful!

I had that big book of rhymes (Pussy-cat Pussy-cat where have you been) when my children were young and have looked for it every since – could you give me a little bit of info. on it – It was published in the U.K. I think – I would love to track it down and get a copy for my grandchildren !

gorgeous crowns, you are so clever! the illustration in the first picture got me all excited – is it Frank Francis? He illustrated two of my most very very favouritist childrens books of all time. Grandmother Lucy and Her Hats and Grandmother Lucy’s Garden by Joyce Wood. There’s another Grandmother Lucy book too (can’t remember title)that I’m always on the lookout for in op shops!

yes, here’s more information about that book: ‘silver nutmeg, golden pear:
traditional rhymes’ chosen by peggy blakeley with pictures by frank francis.
    published by a & c black, london, 1973.
let me know if you can’t find it- i’d be happy to send you our copy! (it’s
    pretty beaten up though.)

You are so sweet – thanks so much – our copy fell apart with being read constantly by my five boys – I think it is one of the best rhyme books ever.
I love reading your blog and looking at all the lovely things you create, thanks once again.    The crowns turned out wonderfully.    Loved the poem by Hillaire Belloc also and the Nativity book.    Very foggy in Chicago this morning.
    Have a great weekend.

Wonderful gifts! Oh, to have such a life again in which it is appropriate to wear a crown!
Maybe someday when I don’t have so many important parent-y things to attend.
They turned out perfectly for forest royalty, in my opinion.

really lovely crowns, keeping it woodsy is a good idea I think. elf like kings and queens are a lot nicer to think about than the real golden ‘off with her head’ type ones. 🙂
