Zuc 2

Zuc 3

Zuc 1

I saw some beautiful paintings of vegetables in the book 'In the Kitchen' by Yuko Yamamoto the other day. (I saw them here, at Hanna's blog.) They were so simple and evocative. They made me think of the two zucchini (courgette) plants in our front garden, which at the moment are growing so wildly they are creeping out of the gate and across the street. I have to keep cutting them back so passers-by don't trip on their tendrils and leaves. I couldn't resist doing a quick watercolour painting of them.

We've been grating the street-zucchini up and making simple little fritters for dinner quite often. I've also left bundles of them by the letterbox with a sign that says 'home-grown zucchini, please help yourself.' The children are very keen for people to take them away.

But my favourite thing to do with them is make chocolate-zucchini cake. I made one last night- using a recipe quite similar to this one (but with greek yoghurt instead of milk). It came out quite moist and sticky, yet light. Thank you zucchini…

    how lucky your neighbors are!
I am still only giving away by girls eggs… better than nothing.
I do have grand hopes for my veggie garden this year though.

I loved when we grew our own zucchini, especially when we grilled slices — yum! We grew yellow crookneck squash and were quite happy with them.

I agree they make a nice cake. Much lighter than carrot cake. I envy your sunshine…still snowing in my part of the UK.

I’m growing some heirloom pumpkins this year and they are sending out triffid-like tendrils all over the place. I checked out the recipe site, what a great place! Zucchini cake is on the cards for work colleagues – a “random act of chocolate” this week, I think 🙂

hey fiona, i know it sounds a bit yuck, but its actually very nice! you dont really taste the zucchini… it just adds to the texture of the cake. (and its a good way to get children to eat a lot of the vegetable without noticing…)

This post reminds me of our summer squash and zucchini garden. your so right about them going wild and out of control. To feed our family, we plant about 4 of each of these and still wind up with enough to feed the chickens and make a veggie stand for the kids to sit at, passing along home grown goodness! So cute! You can eat the blossoms as well. Pinching them will also keep the production levels down and will pass the energy onto the already fruiting veggies.

I have a book from the ’70’s called Zucchini cookery… its says on the back if you cook every recipe on the book you’ll have cooked 93 pounds of zucchini… NOW THAT IS INSANE! But we LOVE chocolate zucchini cake ( we can even freeze it and enjoy in the winter months!)

Zucchini is a living organism that strives to take over everything it encounters! LOL! It can grow even in the northernmost states here in the USA. It does taste good, though! Love Zucchini chocolate cake!

    Hello!
I have been stopping by here a few times a month for a very long time now. I’m ashamed to say that I don’t think I have ever left a comment until now, bad form, I know. I’m a homeschooling mama to three cute kids, in the process of adopting a sibling group from Bulgaria, who also designs little girls sewing patterns. I have thougt of you so very often since I found a copy of “The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady” by Edith Holden. It’s a nature diary with all handpainted botanicals and handwritten descriptions. Oh my, it reminds me so much of your beautiful blog! I kept meaning to tell you about this book, because I thought you would really enjoy it. You can see it for yourself here http://www.amazon.com/Country-Diary-Edwardian-Lady-1906/dp/080501232X/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1265128316&sr=8-7.
Thanks for your amazing blog! I am always so inspired by your fabrics and embroidery, you are truly gifted!
    xoxo,

See! I knew you would love it! That’s funny, I think that part of what kept me from telling you about it was the thought that you probably already had it! The book is lovely, and I didn’t know until I looked it up on Amazon for you that there were a couple more of them. Learn something new every day!
    Have a wonderful day!

I must admit to be very jealous about your abundant crop! everyone said plant only one plant as it will produce so many you’ll want to give them away, well I listened and so far I haven’t had as many as I want. My favourite recipe is from Simon and Alison Holst, it’s a chocolate cake cooked a a slowcooker – yummy. I wish I lived on your street, I’d be waiting at the zucchini box!
