I was listening to a science podcast from our national radio station last week, in which local organic winemakers talked about biodiversity in their vineyards. In particular it was about how they use flowering plants around their crops to encourage 'good' insects, and keep away others that are not beneficial. NZ native plants are often used, but one winemaker mentioned the common plant alyssum for its hardiness and quick-flowering properties.

Although it is native to the Mediterranean, alyssum was always growing in borders around my Mum's garden when I was small, and still does. There's a nice little crop of alyssum growing in my garden too, amongst some succulents. I like how it's extremely delicate and fine, but tough.

i love the smell of alyssum but I don’t have any in my garden since it is an annual here in our northern climate and I have a very low maintenance garden with perennials, wild flowers and herbs.

Very popular plant about 20 years ago, usually planted with dark blue lobelia. Seems to have fallen out of favour. I had forgotten how pretty it is, might just have to buy a packet of seeds for this summer.
Your work is so delicately beautiful, a gentle pleasure every time I visit your blog.
    Thank you

When I was growing up my mother had a seasonal greenhouse business. She grew so many wonderful things. I remember the pretty little alyssum, it just kept going all season!

I love to plant alyssum and lobelia on the edges of my planters that line the sides of my front porch steps. As they grow they trail down the sides…beautiful!

I have fond childhood memories of helping my grandmother to scatter alyssum seeds in the cracks of the old concrete steps that led up to her wooden verandah, and admiring the flowers that sprang from them later. it works if you have an old cracked concrete path, too – it’s amazing how little space you need to grow a plant sometimes… your garden is looking beautiful.

thanks, kathryn- i bought that particular grey linen from a shop on etsy that is no longer active- its japanese.
other times i use pure linen found at my local fabric store- and sometimes even cut up linen clothes if they have good embroidery potential!
