Feeling light today. The cafe work has finished for me and I'm feeling grateful to have time and motivation for my creative work. The school holidays have also finished, and the children were happy to go back to school. Got lots of washing, shopping and small jobs done in preparation. And there's a windy but golden day outside.

I was given the old straw sewing box by a friend who was sorting out some of her childhood things. It's huge and perfect for embroidery threads. A few months ago, I was given a bag of vintage embroidery silk by a kind blog reader- it used to belong to her grandmother who was an amazing embroiderer. So over the weekend I carefully wound some of the silks onto pieces of recycled card. I started with the pinks. I hope i can do them justice.

    I know you can do them justice. Love all the pretty shades of pink. It’s amazing all the beautiful shades exist that people never associate with the color. Enjoy your time

    I find that winding embroidery thread is very relaxing. My daughter and I worked through a bag of skeins last winter. It is also fun to organize them by color. So many possible combinations! Your photos have given me a lift this evening.

    I’ve never been a pink person, and yet my daughter (I still startle a little, saying that, after two boys) lives and breathes the color. Instinctively, automatically, she is simply passionate about pink. (I painted the poor girl’s room robin’s egg.) You’ve brought me a new appreciation of the color here, palest petals, shell interiors. I needed that.

    The last picture of thread intrigues me – fast to light and boiling (on the label). I can’t think of why you would boil thread – any idea?

    hi laura, good question!
    i wonder if it’s from the days when women would boil their laundry to get everything really clean? so, lovely hand-embroidered and sewn garments could keep their bright colours if ‘boilproof’ threads were used.

    Oh they are lovely, I have a wee sewing box just like your one and I keep my ” specially special” buttons in it. I have to be very strict on this or it would be full in no time. (I am a sucker for a nice old button).

    Those pinks are truly gorgeous! And your embroidery is always beautiful. I like your interpretation of nature in your embroidery.
    I was interested to see you are listening to Sia. My husband toured with her a couple of years ago when she was singing for Zero 7 (he is a sound engineer). I liked one video she did very much, with lots of Polaroid photos. I don’t remember the song, just the visuals!

    The sewing box is so lovely, and seeing all those threads lined up like that is just gorgeous. And “feeling light today”, I don’t think I’ve ever heard a better way to put it. May I borrow the phrase? 🙂
