Plants 3

Tom's aunt Fini gave the children a great vintage book called 'Indoor and Outdoor Gardening for Young People' by Cynthia and Alvin Koehler (1969) along with a packet of cress seeds. These seeds have been Keira's pet project over the past week- she helped to plant them in a plastic container, water them and check on their progress all with the utmost care.  Fini kindly gave her a water hyacinth for her birthday in a special vase and that has also been very exciting. It's been sitting on a sunny windowsill, slowly unfolding.

The little garden of cress grew very quickly and yesterday the children ate their first cress sandwich, which K declared to be delicious. The cress sandwiches reminded me of growing seeds inside eggshells when I was little- do you remember doing that too? We would draw faces on the shells and then the growing cress was like hair. I think those egg-heads should be our next indoor gardening project.

I never did the egg-heads, what a fun project! Seeds and bulbs are wonderful gifts for children.

Your Aunt is very thoughtful. My children love these types of projects. So much more interesting than a plastic toy!

I like growing carrot tops in water as well (even at my age!!) Grass makes good egg head hair, but you can’t eat that.
Your first picture makes me want winter to hurry up here. I know it’s not a popular attitude, but I love it when the days get shorter and it gets cold. (Actually it’s only about 13-18C here most days and raining for about the last 10 days, so it’s not even a proper summer…)

You know…I always loved doing bonsai with my kids. I know people are always acting like kids can’t do things like that, but the truth is that children are artists by their very nature. With a little guidance, they can have a bonsai that is in their life till the day they die! I started my kids out with bonsai seeds and my 20 year old has several beautiful bonsai that he took to college with him as a result! Not only did bonsai inspire their artistic ability, it inspired a sense of inner peace, and confidence in the sustainability of a life well lived. Give it a try! :o)
