Thank you for entering the competition for the calendar over the weekend. I used the random number generator to pick a winner, and that turned out to be Megan of Mousehouse. Hooray!

The photos above show a few of the things we've been up to at our place over the last week or so:

-When the children had a 'peaceful day' at home from school we made a bird feeder for our garden. Due to a lack of pine cones and lard (we originally wanted to make a feeder like this or this) we went rather low-tech and used a humble branch, which I tied to a tree outside the kitchen window. Then we mixed up a special paste of peanut butter and bird seed (K proudly did this) and spread it on the branch and waited for hungry birds. Nothing happened for about two days, then a blackbird found it and gobbled all the seeds up. It was very exciting.

– Ciabatta rolls were made early this morning when i discovered I didn't have any bread for the school lunchbox sandwiches. (this happens often because I'm a disorganised mama.) I reached for my trusty bread dough which lives in the back of the fridge, pulled off small hunks then baked them in the oven for about ten minutes. Easier than a quick trip to the supermarket. I love this recipe.

– We made the cress egg-heads. They were the best thing.

isn’t it funny how it takes a while for the birds to find the food? each winter when we make some we feel like we wasted our time for the first few days, then it’s gone in an instant! I love your little feeder! and of course the rolls look yum

You baked that bread from little hunks torn from dough in your refrigerator!? Wow! I want some of that dough – your sandwich looks delicious.

dang.. gonna try me some of that bread… thanks for the link. the birds dont mind how crude the feeders are, think the aesthetics are lost on them..and surely it isnt so bad if they have to work at bit at their balancing. my grandad has a few nails sticking out of his fence and he just attaches apple, toast crusts etc and they seem to like little bowls of sugar water too

A woman after my own heart – bread, cheese, pickled onions and chutney – the picture of the bread roll made me hungry! Are they homemade pickled onions? And what sort of chutney is it? I’ve never made chutney but have been looking for a good recipe to try.

ha- yes, i do love pickled onions too!
sadly, theyre just shop-bought, i would love to make my own some day but i dont fancy the idea of peeling so many onions all in one go..
maybe ill give it a try this summer, though. the chutney was made by toms mum- its green tomato chutney- yum!

Your feeder is wonderful – alas, the squirrels would have been at it in no time at my house!

It is wonderful to read about cool weather when we are waiting for very hot weather today is the Pacific Northwest of the USA. I don’t like the heat, but at 5am I have fans going and it is cool. I enjoy your blog.
