Window 3

Window 1

Window 2

There's a small but wide window above our bed for which I'd hoped to buy a roman blind. I looked all over town and couldn't find a ready-made blind to fit. But then I remembered that last year, my self-sufficient sister decked out her entire house in blinds that she had made herself. When I asked her about it, she waved her hand casually and said it was easy- 'anyone could do it.' Turns out it wasn't so easy for me. I bought some warm curtain fabric to fit the window. I got all the little rings, strings and a book about blind-making. But how to put them all together was beyond me.

Then I got this great book from the library, and realised I could make a simpler window covering that was just a rectangle of fabric with hooks, that could be looped up during the day and unlooped at night. For some reason, it ended up being one of the trickiest thing I've sewn in years, and I have no idea why, except to say that I'm seriously lacking skill when it comes to making practical things. (I'd rather sew a lined chiffon dress than a curtain, for example.) I thought I'd measured and cut the fabric carefully, but the finished result was rather lop-sided and wonky. And the fabric I chose to line the blind was more drapey than the other layer, and kept shifting and moving while I was sewing them together, which resulted in many unpickings and swear words. Hopefully, no one will ever look too closely at it and I'll just pretend this was already in the house when we moved in.

so many things you said in this post gave me a big smile, i can understand the frustrations of curtain making… yet something fussier would be no problem – go figure? i made curtains last night and into the wee hours i was cutting where I shouldn’t and well i pieced it back together but it got tedious : ) i love the idea of little hooks on this curtain, and the color of your wall is lovely!

LOL I totally relate to this post. My last attempt at making curtains ended in a lot of tears and frustration maybe it was the pregnancy or just that I couldn’t wrap my mind around the instructions.
I continue sewing dresses and bags but when it comes to curtains god bless the store bought one!

i can totally relate to this
i can make complicated shapes all come together on a missing pieces stone
but try to cut and sew squares together so they line up perfectly
    well that’s another story

I had to smile too, when I read ‘which resulted in many unpickings and swear words’. Nothing makes me want to swear more than sewing gone wrong!
Your window treatment looks quite lovely despite the trouble you had. 🙂

I have a friend who made all her own roman blinds. I really wanted some and asked if she’d show me how. She then told me that she’d had them made but couldn’t remember where!!The thought must have been too much to handle…

Very funny. I’m glad now that I shutters and no neighbors, so I don’t need to have curtains at all! Your “rectangle” looks pretty good to me, and it matches nicely the color scheme of the room.

It looks really good. Who goes around looking at other peoples curtains too closely anyway? Only really close friends…x

I love it! Over time you will forget all the trouble you had in making it. I’ve made many curtains after each time I say never again, they’ve got to be the most frustrating things to sew. I can so relate to this post, especially the swear words 🙂

I couldn’t agree with you more on the curtain making- despite making clothes, toys, quilts etc I am currently saving up for a nice lady who can sew straight lines to make blinds for my bedroom and lounge!

Ha….roman blinds, they are indeed tricky to make, I still have to make two of them but keep doing other things, it’s one of those things that I find not very satisfying to make but need to be done….meaby next week I”ll start ;-(

I can sooo relate! Only I would struggle on the dress as well. I love sewing but it really is a challenge – yet somehow I keep looking for new projects to work on! I need to find something for our new home as well, only four of the challenging rectangles are 30 feet above my head!
I love the fabric you chose and you really did do a good job!

Ha, sounds similar to my tale of the roman blind for the toilet (http://thebowerbirdstories.typepad.com/the_bowerbird_stories/2010/08/story-176-the-ugly-duckling.html) – picking french striped fabric was probably ambitious. But all things turn out ok in the end, right? K

i have looked so closely at professionally made blinds and Curtains and just have no idea how they get them so perfect looking! even with buying all the right bits – mine still look homemade to the extreme! good effort on yours!

No! Roman Blinds are actually pretty easy. I got a book from the UK “heather Lukes Complete Curtain Making Course. And she shows how to make them by hand – amazingly MUCH easier than doing it by machine and much more satisfying. I’ve made 3 sets and they all look good. Stick with it!!

Ha! My Mum always said that sewing curtains was the hardest thing of all. I have never had the courage to attempt them myself.
And also? Those handpainted cups are just beautiful. Where does one get something like ceramic ink?

thanks, megan. and i think your mum was correct on the curtain thing.
the ceramic ink comes from the craft shop/spotlight/etc
