Ferns 4

The biggest project of the school holidays has been finished: sewing curtains for the house. Well, just three pairs, but they were large windows. This was a big job and I'm very relieved to have finished. I used a kind of thick, slightly textured cotton in a natural shade, and lined them with a fine white cotton. I knew I wanted to hand-print the curtains in some way, and I was hoping to achieve a kind of simple, airy effect (we have dark wooden floors and lots of wooden furniture.) In the end I settled on a set of drawings I'd made of fern fronds found in my parents' garden. I drew these on to freezer paper and my dear, sweet and patient Tom cut each one out and used them as a stencil on the newly sewn curtains. We printed the ferns in white ink, running along the bottom of each drop. I found this book recently at a library sale, and the chapter on simple lined curtains was useful to read before beginning.

Actually, this project was quite fun- not at all as bad as I imagined it would be. It helped that we listened to 90's pop songs and drank black coffee while we were working, though. Even so, I think I might take a (long) break before starting work on curtains for the other rooms.

Hope you have a good weekend ahead.

Oy. This is my next endeavor. I’m relying heavily on the caffeine, and will take the 90’s pop under advisement. I’m thinking lots of Depeche Mode and OMD…
The print on the wall is just stunning. Is it your own work?
The end results, by the way, are stunning. Ferns are my favorite of all plants.

Oh yes curtains are a big job aren’t they. Especially if the fabric needs ironing, I hate that part. Your curtains look beautiful, and I love the print you used. Isn’t it so satisfying once they’re done!

The curtains look lovely, especially the fern bits. I’m in the midst of a curtain sewing project, and I think you’ve revealed what I’ve been missing: caffeine.

I also made a printed tablecloth, some time ago… it was my first project with fabric painting, but I enjoyed it a lot!
I used the same natural colors as you…it is a relaxing combination!

Team work is the best, especially with good music.Your curtains look great! I too have to make some curtains and thought of hand printing them too, by applying paint to leaves…we’ll see.

Tom sounds like my husband, I often show him a pattern and say “enlarge it please”. Are you able to use the stencils more than once? I love the finished result, simple and perfect. Happy weekend

Enjoy these curtains! The last time I made curtains was back when my husband was a medical student. I made curtains for every window in our apartment. Of course, that was before I had children, so I had lots of uninterrupted time! My house now is modern, with big windows that don’t call for curtains. Just a few shades here and there. Enjoy the weekend!
