Poppy 1

Poppy 2

Poppy 3

My friend Helen sent me a pad of watercolour paper made up into postcards: blank on one side with address lines and a stamp-square on the other side. Something about those little pieces of lovely paper made me want to get out my paints, so I made some postcards to send to friends. They are faux-scientific cards: I tried to draw in a very controlled way, but it didn't last for very long.

The poppy card was inspired by my garden: the first poppy in there opened up today. It's so big and dramatic and still a little wrinkled from its weeks spent tightly folded up in the bud. I don't have tansy or violets in the garden, but I can dream.

What a great gift to send you watercolour paper postcards. That’s hardly surprising that you’ve turned them into beautiful garden postcards. If they’re watercolour paints just make sure you set it somehow before you send it. I’m sure you’re so experienced in this department you already have that sorted, but it would break my heart to think those lovely drawings will meet a streaky end in the post on a rainy day! ;o)

i had a poppy open by my bedside this week & the petals of it were exactly the same texture as monarch butterfly wings after they have just come out of their chrysalis, that’s what i thought anyway! all crumpled & thin & slightly damp.

Isn’t it sad that I’ve never seen a poppy in real life? I love the red and it is so cheerful.

The new cards are lovely and really like your poppy painting, not sure that I could make very detailed artwork either.

I have to admit that the poppy card jumped out at me. I happen to like poppies so the picture of the poppy and the card are a lovely addition to the day.
