Homemade 1

Homemade 2

Back when i was in primary school, I remember getting a book out of the library about making skincare products at home and triumphantly finding, amongst its pages, a cure for my freckles. (As far as I remember, that involved painting my face with lemon juice. I thought the freckles were slightly faded after that but noone else seemed to notice.) Anyway, I had a flash-back to those days when I tried out a recipe this week for deodorant. Yep, that's right, homemade deodorant. I've never been a fan of the store-bought stuff (there's some fairly sketchy ingredients in it, but you probably already know that) and hadn't had much luck with the crystal/natural types either.

And then my clever friend Jenny shared with me her ingredients so I could make some myself (I think she ordered them locally here– which is the same place where i bought the supplies to make this soap last year.) She was inspired by this post at Angry Chicken and used a similar recipe. Here's Jenny's recipe version. Mine was pretty much the same, except I added some lavender essential oil because I probably need all the help I can get to smell nicer. Ha. I'm very pleased with it so far! And, of course, there is quite a satisfaction in knowing I made something so practical.

You might be wondering what that strange, unappetising brown stuff is in the photo above. Well that's my new body-scrub, also made from stuff in the pantry. I found the recipe in an old gardening magazine (in an article written by this lady), and it's just a mixture of 4 spoonfuls of brown sugar, 4 spoonfuls of olive oil and 3 of cocoa powder. It works really well as an exfoliater, and smells lovely, too, of course.

I’ve just finished reading a book about a shipwreck where the survivors used penguin blood to wash themselves. How’s THAT for a natural cosmetic!

perhaps we’re not doing so badly after all, with our homemade stuff…

It sounds just like my story. I am leery of the ingredients in “regular” deodorant, but every natural option I could find in the stores left me stinky. I very skeptically tried a similar homemade recipe, and I’ve found it actually works better than the “regular” stuff. No stinks here anymore!
Love the idea of a homemade body scrub, may have to try that.

good luck with the natural deodorant. right now i use some “pit paste” made by the local natural pharmacy – a mix of azelaic acid, calendula, chamomilia, witch hazel and sage – which works pretty well (much better than other “natural” options), but might be neat to try and make my own.

I often use oil and sugar for a hand scrub – it feels wonderful for hours afterwards. Neat idea to add some cocoa to make it smell nice too!

I’ve been wanting to try that for a long time, but aside from baking soda, I can’t find any of the ingredients here. Or so I believe, as I haven’t looked too hard to be honest. Good reminder Melissa!

I’ve been thinking of trying a recipe like that for awhile, thanks for the supplies link that was the bit the had put me off. Sometimes it’s hard to know where to get the supplies for a recipe like that. You’ll have to give us an update on how it’s working for you.

Oh gosh, oh gosh — I’m going to make that scrub tonight! I already use sea salt and olive oil, but the thought of the smell of cocoa mixed in is just too good to resist 🙂

Four spoonfuls of brown sugar, and four of olive oil and three of cocoa powder sounds delightful and could only smell so too. I must try this at home. I must.

    Hello Melissa,
I just have to say a big THANK YOU for posting the home-made deo recipe. I had a little hard time finding the shea butter (I am in Kenya, most of the shea butter goes for export). It took me like 5 miniutes to make the deo and I shared it with my Mum and sister. And guess what…it WORKS!!!!!!! 🙂 I could not believe it! I sweat buckets here and by mid-day my store bought deo gives me a weird smell combined with my perspiration. Plus I dont feel as wet under my arms as before. I am so happy to say that those days are long gone! I threw out all my store bought deos. Thank you thank you.
PS- I love your blog and stumbled upon it accidently 2 months ago and now I read it regularly. So from all the way in Kenya “habari” 🙂 -T.A.
