I found an old map of the lower North Island of NZ in the paper bin when I was doing some recycling at our local depot. It was printed in 1974. Something about the colours of the map made me pick it out and it waited on my desk for a few weeks until I had an idea for it. And last week I finally cleaned it up a bit: ironed out all the creases and removed some of the marks. Then I did a bit of cutting and pasting to make these small giftcards and matching envelopes. It's such a simple idea, but each card and envelope set is completely different and features a few little spots from the North Island- some I've been to, and others I haven't.

Getting a closer look at the places on the map reminded me of a road trip that some friends and I took one winter when we were at University. We fed black swans in Rotorua, ate Chinese food in Shannon, stopped in Bulls to look at antiques, put on make-up and went out dancing in Taupo. Thank you, old map, for reminding me.

I love maps!! Even old maps seem to me to show a simpler time. The older they are, they show little towns whose names have been changed over the years, or the size of the town has expanded to be huge.
Good ideas abound no matter where you find them.

these are so lovely. my college had a map library that sold old maps for pennies–I bought some back then and used as stationary and wrapping paper, but now I wish I’d gotten so many more.

You have the most wonderful inventive mind for using found things…all I seem to do is find bits and pieces and hoard them as I can’t seem to translate them into other objects…so inspirational!

Love your blog!! I have just started a blog about getting back to basics and being able to pass these skills on to my 3 gorgeous girls. I really love this idea. First of all, who doesn’t love a map? Second of all, who doesn’t love getting neat cards in the post?? It’s a win/win for everyone!! Wonderful!!
I am not as advanced as you are yet with my blog but it’s a project which I look forward to improving all the time! I did a post on sourdough bread and noticed you did a 5 minute bread, I am going to try that one next! You can see my blog at http://www.sweetnektar.wordpress.com if you are interested and have any advice? I am based in Auckland. Keep up the good work!!!

Lovely cards. Where did you get the envelopes and are they called anything in particular. So much nicer that the boring ones we usually have.
I pull stuff out of bins too, including recently some wooden knives, forks and spoons from a cafe where I happened to be by the bin. They don’t use any real plates, cups or cutlery, everything is disposable but the cutlery looked so gorgeous I couldn’t resist, nabbed the ones on the top and took them home to wash. Have since used as art tools and have plans to make some art out of them.
