I've always thought of violets and pansies as being like small faces, looking forwards or upwards. These little ones came out of the garden. I think the person who planted the garden before we arrived liked the colour purple, because we also have stasis, lavender, violets and some other purple plants whose names are a mystery to me.

They inspired some hand-sewn pins for today's shop update. I'm thinking this will be the last time I update my shop for the year. It's getting close to the cut-off date for Christmas postage overseas (a couple more days, they say) although there's a bit longer to order anything within New Zealand.

Thank you very much for your support of my work throughout the year! I love being able to do what I do, even if the man in our local post office gets tired of me occasionally. Maybe I will make him a Christmas cake.

    We call the little pansies Johnny Jump-Ups. And they really do seem to jump up in our garden year after year. Pretty things in the shop today.

    I’ve always loved the subtle smell that violets have – they remind me of my grandmother. She used to help me make tiny bouquets of them when I stayed with her as a child. Her arthritis was so bad she couldn’t bend down to get close enough to pick them herself, but she always used to find me itsy bitsy vases to fill. What beautiful things.

    Like you, I love the pansies. I have one plant with purple and yellow together on flowers in a pot outside my window, and right now it is snowing on their petals. What can they be thinking?

    I’ve always loved those little faces, but I can’t plant them here – not that they wouldn’t grow, but the deer think they are a salad bar and they are gone as soon as they flower.
    My Grandmother died when I was very, very young, but I remember going to her grave seeing purple and yellow pansies all over it. In the old days in Europe, you had a little plot of fenced garden for the grave site. It was much more personal. I still think of her when I see pansies.

    I absolutely love violets and pansies. I also really enjoy purple flowers in a garden. It looks especially beautiful against the green and during dawn and dusk.
    Is the man a bit of a grump? We have one too so I choose to go to the happy lady post office instead.
