So far this summer, I've been spending most of the time keeping children busy and fed and entertained. You know how it is. And there has also been some time with my sunhat on, digging around in the garden. The progress on that front is that we have a couple of new and large garden beds in which to plant vegetables, and I've put some natives in the more rocky parts of the garden. (Hebes and mountain daisies, because I love those especially.) So my reward for all that work (aside from a new batch of freckles) was this bunch of flowers picked this morning from around the house. I love those summery colours and dahlias are a new favourite.

In the evenings since Christmas time, I've been working on this cross-stitch sampler. It all started when I found a very old and beautiful framed sampler in an antique shop, but couldn't quite afford it. I'm designing this one as I go, using snippets of other samplers for inspiration and the charts for the birds, etc. It's something I've always wanted to make but never thought I would have the time- and indeed, it is a very slow-moving piece of work. And because the linen I chose to work on has a somewhat uneven weave, it requires more concentration than I had anticipated. But I only have myself to blame for that one.

The flowers are so pretty. I’ve been wanting to do a sampler for quite a few years now. Yours is coming along nicely.

Is that what you call Belfast Linen? I love the look of the fabric and the stitches on the fabric- and the wee birds are fantastic.

How did your miniature sweet peas come up? We came home from a week’s camping yesterday, to a pot full in flower – lovely!

Gorgeous! I LOVE cross stitch and this one is looking lovely! Keep up the great work! They do take ages to make, but I think sewing/embrioderty/knitting and cross-stitch especially is great for the soul!! Happy New Year, Ike

This is very different than your usual embroideries. It must be satisfying to try something different. I like that you have included the house, and made the birds green.

Hi Melissa, beautiful flowers and I look forward very much to seeing the hebes and mountain daisies in full splendour in Spring. Thanks for swinging by my blog and so glad you liked the wire stuff. Absolutely no rocket science of any kind.

This project reminds me of a sampler my mother has from the nineteenth century. It has such subtle muted shades because it has faded over time.
We both have red valerian in our gardens, although mine is still asleep.

Your sampler is cute! I like the little birds. I am working on one too as I was inspired by one I have inherited that is about 100 years old- done by my great great auntie (I think) when she was about 10 years old! It is slow going, but well worth the effort I reckon. My 6 year old son got inspired too and designed a cross stitch pattern that I am working on as well.

Your sampler is gorgeous – a different style to your more freeform embroidery. It’s lovely, very delicate looking.
Aren’t we lucky to have this glorious summer stretching out before us? It was rainy here today, but I see you had cheery blue skies!

Your lovely pictures make me long for summertime… Winter in Chicago is no fun. I know what you mean about the project being slow-going, I have a quilt I feel like I’ve been making for a thousand years. However, the cross-stitch is beautiful and I’m sure will be well-worth all the work!

Oh my, this post is pure sweet. Around here it’s cold hands, cold feet, layers of clothing, and more logs piled on the fire. So nice reading about warmth. I just picked up a lovely cross-stitch butterfly this afternoon at consignment shop. Your stitchery is looking good!

Your sampler is of to a beautiful start. I love sewing samplers (from patterns and designing my own, which is definitely slower going!) I like the fact that I can pit it down for months and still come back to it, a little bird here, a little flower there, and it grows with time. As a child I used to love looking at all the Victorian samplers in the local museum, and be amazed that they were made by children the same as me, inspirational! A lady local to me designs samplers inspired by those in that museum and other local collections – you might find some inspiration in her work too? http://www.moirablackburn.com/largesamplers/large_main.htm

Happy New Year Melissa. I was interested to see that you’re listening to Joni M’s ‘Blue’ as it was my prized possession when it first came out all those years ago. Great to see another generation listening to it &, I hope, loving it. Still in Oz & enjoying your blog as usual. X

The sampler is looking lovely – I think it’s so much nicer to design your own, as they are all so personal to the creator. Your ancestors who whiled away the long evenings stitching would be very proud of you and your beautiful work.
