Plums 2

Plums 1

Plums 3

Plums 4

Cicadas and bees are humming outside, the radio's going inside, it's hot and sticky, and I've made things even sweeter and stickier with a spot of jam-making. Thank you, K, for the bag of red-fleshed plums- we made jam with them. X

Hope your Monday is going well and you're not getting into any sticky messes.

My friend just brought me a whole heap of plums from her tree just like the ones on your bowl. I just ate the last one this morning. They where such a beautiful colour in side.

I love the labels. I ran into a friend at the grocers this morning. She was buying imported strawberries because she had run out of her strawberry jam and had the urge to make more, even though it is well below zero degrees F and we have 3 feet of snow on the ground. Strawberry season is still 6 months off for us. I’m sure her jam tasted good, as I’m sure yours must as well!

Hi Melissa – we’re in jam, pickle and sauce mode here too! I love the labels btw, I’m curious about how you get them to stick to the jars as I’ve just been unsuccessfully trawling google for lable sticking tips! X Claire

Yum! And what cute labels! We’re also in jam-making, sauce-making mode here – our tomatoes are out of control, and we’re freezing them as fast as we can pick them so we can make up a big batch of sauce on Saturday. What fun!

Like the others, I’m a bit envious of your warm, sunshiny, bee-buzzing world. It’s minus 29 celcius right now in Ottawa. I might just have to warm up with toast and some plum jam (luckily I have some in the fridge, though not homemade sadly).
    Have a sweet week!

This post makes me sooooo happy. Partly because it’s -27C here with the windchill today, partly because I made spiced plum butter for the first time last fall and it’s my favourite, and partly because I love those sweet little labels! Thanks for brightening an otherwise cold, cold, cold day!

Homemade plum jam sounds so delicious. I keep meaning to make jam but it seems complicated. Do you use a water bath to preserve it?

    PLUMS!!
after 3 weeks of debilitating sickness of days and nights that run together and rain pouring down…
    ahhhhh…plums.
The reminder of warm weather to come.
At our farm we moved to a year ago there are no less than 6 plums trees. 4 mature ones and 2 young. They were laden with fruit last year…BUT…because of the lack of pruning much of it was in the very peaks of the tree branches mocking us.
We did get to enjoy several sack fulls though.
This spring there will be pruning and much jam at my farm.
thanks for the reminder of good things to come Melissa :o)

hi julia, no i dont use a water bath but i do sometimes if im preserving pieces of fruit in jars. for the jam, i placed the jars and lids in the oven for half an hour or so (on medium heat) to sterilise them.
