Today
Yesterday was a dark day for New Zealand. Just before 1 pm, the biggest city in our beautiful South Island was hit by yet another earthquake, but this time the damage was much worse than the quake suffered last September.

People were out and about in the central city as the spire crumbled from the cathedral, buildings buckled and folded, roads tore open and water began pouring out. As of writing, 75 people have been confirmed dead and 300 people are listed as being still missing. Rescue workers are desperately trying to get any possible survivors out from crumbled buildings.

Thank you for your messages of support and enquiries about how we are doing. Christchurch is about 5 hours' drive from our city, so we are all thankful to be safe. My friends and family who live in Christchurch are fine, as far as I know. It's all so shocking and sad and I wish there was more I could do to help. My father and uncle are travelling there this afternoon to help with the rescue effort. I've updated my etsy shop and will donate proceeds from any sales made today to the NZ Red Cross. If  you would like to make a donation to the relief fund, there is a list of options here. Dear people of Christchurch, if you're reading this, our thoughts and love are with you all the time, kia kaha. X

Yes, it seems surreal . . . . thinking of all those who have lost loved ones, those who are looking for survivors and the ones still to be found . . . .

I was so worried about you and your family, it’s weird how internet connect people that don’t know each other… so as soon as I heard I had you on my thoughts. Good to know you are o.k even thought the news are really sad. Hugs from Colombia.

I’ve read your blog for a couple of years now and I hadn’t visited for some time. As soon as I read about the earthquakes I had to come make sure you and your family are okay! Prayers to your country that they find swift healing, find the missing and that as many people as possible continue to stay safe!

I love your writing, art, and New Zealand. I spent three months on the South Island back in 2005, including time in beautiful ChCh. My husband did a semester abroad at Lincoln U. Sending good thoughts to all of you from Switzerland.

Thanks for your words Melissa, I was visiting at a hospital in the CBD when it struck and my first reaction this time around was anger rather than the fear of last time. Me and mine are alive, our house has a few more cracks and the street is a mess. A water supply would be good, and so would a sewerage system. Christchurch folk moved on from the first one quickly, but this earthquake has changed our city forever. I think my kids (of similar age to yours) will be teenagers before this city is back to being a normal, happy go lucky city with tall buildings full of happy go lucky people going about their business. But, I’m positive – I will stay here, and help rebuild the community spirit of this great place, just like many others no doubt will.
Just want to add, we’re all close to faults in this country, make sure you have water stored away for a disaster, and keep a well stocked pantry. Screw tall bookcases to walls etc.
    Thanks again.
