Tues 4

To be honest, it seems wrong to be writing about anything here that is not related to the Christchurch earthquake that happened one week ago today. There are still people missing, and bodies are being discovered and identified gradually, day by day. Many people still have no electricity or water, while others are homeless. The victims of the earthquake came from all over the world- Chch was an international city. It's truly heartbreaking- every bit of it.

Sometimes though, a bit of crafting can be therapeutic. Arlo and I got up earlier than usual this morning, and found ourselves carving some more stamps at the kitchen table- like those I made last week. We used the stamps to decorate some kraft paper for wrapping presents, and a stack of plain labels which we turned into stickers (some are painted, some are stamped.) Shown above is a gift I made for my Mum- (it was her birthday yesterday)- a case sewn from cotton lawn, containing vintage crochet threads.

Hope you are doing well, wherever you are.

It is a difficult thing to find perspective under tragedy and stress. I felt like that for a long time after the World Trade Center collapsed in NYC. Hard to wrap one’s brain around. On a happier note, a very happy belated birthday to your mum!

I agree with you – it just seems so surreal doesn’t it. My daughters birthday is today and my Mum’s was yesterday too!, it has been strange ‘celebrating’ at such a time of sadness.

The news footage is heartbreaking. I did a heap of baking and had a goodie tray at work – via donation. This morning there was still baking there and I had already collected $96. This afternoon there was just a few items left. The money was locked away for safekeeping – can’t wait to count it in the morning. I found the baking very therapeutic an even better still – not a morsel crossed my lips 🙂

Thank goodness we can find shelter from what ails the world. Retreating to a craft or a book or baking gives us the space we need to process the tragedies that fill our world. I think finding that shelter allows us then, in the next breath, to do whatever we can to help others who may need us.

I have kept myself busy with all kinds of creative stuff since last Tuesday – preserving and knitting seem to be a good way to keep my mind off last week’s events. I have found crafting very therapeutic at this time.

    Melissa,
I do love your tiny, happy, sweet, and creative blog, and wouldn’t have found it if it hadn’t been for some special walnut harvested from my late parent’s property…by a family member of yours.
So it was my mother’s birthday on Feb 27th, just a day before your mother’s, and so to bring her closer to my home here in Olympia, Washington, and soften the sadness of so much loss in Christchurch, I celebrated with some girlfriends, making a few of her favorite recipes from the Southland Times Cookery Book of 1941 – Pikelets, and a Butter Sponge with lemon icing. I will post them to the Cakes for Christchurch link.
My 12 yr old son is also a big fan of Radiohead ( since her was 8!) -and Codex just perfect for these days of reflection.
    Thank you,
    Ginny
