These fabric designs were inspired by a book I was re-reading over the summer, called Charleston: A Bloomsbury House and Garden by Quentin Bell and Virginia Nicholson. (I first blogged about it years ago and still look at it regularly!) I've also been doing furthur reading about the lives of writers Virginia Woolf and Vita Sackville-West, and their relationship during the 1920s. Also over the holiday I read part of Sackville-West's gardening book that used to belong to Tom's grandmother. Inspired by her passion for plants and the garden at Sissinghurst, where she lived, I began making these sketches and watercolour paintings. The 'waves' design was a nod to Woolf and her novel of the same name, published in 1931.

My kind friend Karuna helped me again with preparing the artwork to send to Spoonflower for printing. I'm happy with the finished fabrics, and have a plan to make some cushion covers from them- I think the 'Vita' print with a red wool back would make a great cushion cover. There are some fat quarters in my shop as an experiment- each cut would be enough for a regular-sized cushion I reckon.

I do love reading about the Bloomsbury Group and, as much as I admire their painting, politics, Bohemian lifestyle and writing, I find myself staring at the photos of the textile designs, clothing and ceramics more intently whenever I'm lucky enough to find photos of the interiors of Charleston. You can see some of the rooms here

Enjoy your weekend, lovely readers.

Gorgeous fabric, Melissa- you are so clever. Have you read ‘ The Children’s Book’ by A.S Byatt? It is set a bit earlier than Bloomsbury but a very similar fiction setting. I think you would love it. x

I’m a huge fan of V. Woolf. The Bloomsbury group is a great source of inspiration, and you’ve taken it and made it your own. So lovely.

Have you read A Portrait of A Marriage by Vita’s son? It really is the best version of the story of Vita and Virginia. It also has great photos of the gardens.

I ADORE Virginia Woolf (and I wrote a post about her and “A room of one’s own”). You were able to capture the essence of that years and the feeling her books give to me. Thank you for giving all this inspiration!

Absolutely gorgeous! The Bloomsbury group is a fascinating set; the times, the ideas, the art …and the writing! It’s wonderful to see how they continue to inspire and influence and with such fine results too. Thanks for the links.

Can I tell you something crazy? I was laying on my couch today and the name “Vita Sackville-West” popped in my head! It is in the air! I’ve never read anything by or about her, so now I’m definitely curious.
And! Your fabrics! Gorgeous. Really beautiful job, Melissa.

I’m lucky enough to live nearish Charleston and Sissinghurst. After much moaning and pleading to my partner about wanting to go to Charleston, he finally threw up his arms and jokingly said “If you start crying I’ll take you!” Little did he realise that I can cry on demand and within 30 seconds the tears were rolling down my cheeks. He was stunned and we went the following week! Such an amazing place. So many intriguing nooks and crannies and the characters were really brought to life. Especially the poor housekeeper, who it seems kept the whole home running whilst the bohemian set got up to their wild antics. Love your fabric designs. particularly the flowery black one.

I live within an easy drive of Charleston farmhouse and garden (the gardener is my brother-in-law..)and whenever I need visual inspiration I head there. Your fabrics are beautiful! Virginia’s home – Monk’s House -whilst more visually subdued, also contains lovely painted details and the drawing room is an extraorinary sea-green offset with vivid red geraniums. Shouldn’t work but it does!
