This is another recent library book find of mine: Simple Times: Crafts for Poor People by Amy Sedaris. I found this to be a hilariously funny read. I think it's a must-have for craft blog fans, and not just because the dust jacket can be turned into a stylish bonnet (instructions are given on the back flap.) There is also the plain fact that someone has sharply parodied the handmade movement. And you must admit, we were asking for it.

'Simple Times' draws inspiration from those retro craft books that your Mum used to have on the shelf, you know the ones I mean. Packed full of strangely-technical projects for household items that are more decorative than useful. Amy's book is packed full of such projects, and many more, complete with ambiguous directions and hilariously styled photos. Some projects are extremely dodgy and suggestive. Just so you know.

It's so hard to pick a favourite, amongst all the wonderful ideas packed into this book. There are many things to make with acorns, for example. There are instructions for a fake fringe (bangs) that you can sew inside your hat or wig. Popsicle sticks are another well-used medium. And who doesn't love a well-photographed guide to before and after-crafting stretches. But I think by the end I most admired the Mouse Ghetto (a thoughtfully derelict home you can make for a dying mouse or rat to spend their last moments in.) I love the way A.S thinks.

Not your average craft book, I’d say! Sounds like it would make a very interesting read, thanks for the review Melissa.

obviously I haven’t adjust to the english speaking sense of humour, I found it terrible, not even funny! so it’s good for me to read that you like it, I felt the library was wasting our money big time : )
    cheers, Mariana

ooooh thank you Melissa this sound fantastic and as sweet mary says right up my street. Her brother, David Sedaris is a very well regarded and widely published author of hilarious and incisive personal essays. Worth looking up at the library.

I had that out a couple of weeks ago and it was not at ALL what I expected! So bits were so funny, others I was like ‘whhhaaaaat’ and yes, some was (very!?) dodgy! I bet a lot of people will check it out and get a bit of a surprise when they actually get home and read it…heh.

🙂 i got A.S.’s ‘i like you’ hospitality book, bought at half price at the bookstore. it was one of my best buys. utterly love her sense of humour, stockinged thighs and all the googly eyes. i’m hoping i could someday get a good deal like i had for ‘simple times’. 🙂

Ah, the old dust jacket that can be turned into a stylish bonnet… it is what many good reads lack. Nice find, Melissa. I like your new blog banner too.

Oh, I think I missed it was a parody when I saw it in the store. I passed it by, but will have to scout it out in the library to give it another try.

i borrowed this book a few months ago from the local library because it came up on a search as featuring rag rug making. To start with i was a bit confused with the content and then i realised that it was a total send up of crafting. I thought it was absolutely hilarious and loved it. I She’s pure genius!
