Sweet 1

Sweet 4

Sweet 3

Sweet 2

We don't have a sweets shop in the town where I live, which is rather sad, I think. When I was little there was one that we'd go to sometimes with my Mum. It was tiny and dark with lots of shelves holding clear containers filled with candy of every description (here in NZ, we call them 'lollies'). My favourites were the pastel-coloured powdery bonbons because I was sure they had come from France.

Pictured above are garments I sewed up for my shop update today. When I was finishing them off yesterday, I realised that I was going for a bit of a sweet shop theme without realising it! But I couldn't resist those colours: mint-green, strawberry-pink, grape-purple.

The cardigan was made from an oversized Laura Ashley garment I found at the opshop. The intarsia butterflies spoke to me, they didn't want to be on an adult's sweater anymore. The edges are finished with pink bias trim and the buttons are sewn over plastic snaps for ease of wearing.

I heard on the radio yesterday that groups of monarch butterflies are over-wintering at the tops of trees in the warmer cities of NZ. They cluster together and wait out the cold season and we can contact the NZ Butterfly Trust to report sightings. I'm very keen to find one of these orange clusters- I need to start carrying my camera with me everywhere!

A breath of fresh air in your sewing – as always a delight to see. We used to visit the butterfly tree at a park in Richmond when we lived out that way. It always had lots of Monarch butterflies on it. I wonder if it is still there – might be worth a visit. I hope the children are enjoying their holidays – I certainly am doing lots of relaxing 🙂

Yes! the dress reminds me of a sweet we had(have?) here called ‘Refreshers’ – they are those colours and slightly fizzy (and probably not so good for you!) – off to look in your shop now, my weds morning sweet treat! Cx

Keep looking for those monarchs – I’ve seen them quite a few times in parks here in Christchurch (which wouldn’t be classified as warm, I would think). Often on macrocarpa type pine trees (sorry I’m not good with my trees – but definitely a cyprus/pine type of tree). And other times on a chestnut tree before the leaves had completely fallen. Not just at the tops either, They are especially noticeable on sunny days with their wings open – enjoying the sun no doubt. Good luck!

how beautiful your shop update is! We had a swarm of bees on one of our iceberg roses many years ago, I was so excited and snapped as many photos as I could as close as I could too. I would love to see a swarm of monarchs, I’ll keep my camera in my bag, just in case!

These are all so lovely Melissa. I love the sweet shop theme. When I was at Art school I did a project about a sweet shop in Edinburgh and I did lots of embroideries in mint green and pastel pink. I love those colours. A group of butterflies is called a kaleidiscope of butterflies (not sure how to spell it). Isn’t that a brilliant name!

I’ve seen hundreds of butterflies on a muddy riverbank, and with them fluttering their wings in the sun it is like magic. Many years ago I and a friend also witnessed a butterfly migration. Thousands of them in the sky – what a sight!!!
I love that little sweater – it is just amazing what you come up with Melissa!!!

We have those shops in our area-so much fun even if you just go in and sniff the heavenly aroma. As a child I loved the rock candy.

What darling little outfits. I’ve always had a soft spot for Laura Ashley..and what a creative way to bring out the best of a vintage item.
I took my kid’s yesterday to our old-fashioned sweets shop in town. Rows of glass filled canisters on wooden shelves. School holiday treat only 🙂

oohh is that orginal Crown Lynn I spot … we had the most fab exhibition here in Wgtn recently at City Gallery. Included in the exhibition was an orginal template for this line, so even though the dots were painted freehand they still were in the same sequence.
