Coat 1

This winter was the one in which Keira finally outgrew the coat I'd made for her in Norway. We got a pretty long run from it, really. So I dreamt up this new one for her and finished it last week, just in time for the cold snap. I used some vintage wool plaid for the outside, and some equally old rayon-cotton for the lining. I started out with a commercial pattern- (Kwik Sew #3818) but made quite a few changes- one being to fully line the whole garment. Also I adjusted the size (K is rather on the small side) and omitted the double-breasted look. The front of the coat closes inside with big snaps, and has loops on the outside.

There's still time to enter my giveaway over at the Growmama blog– just leave a comment here to be in to win a parcel of bits and pieces from my etsy shop.

I wish you a very happy weekend- we are settling in by the fire to watch The Princess Bride with the neighbours.

What a perfect little coat that is. Looks like it is a favourite with her already. Hopefully next winter my sewing skills will be up to the challenge of two winter coats for my girls.

That is a very beautiful coat. I love the combination of fabric and lining. I’m guessing by your reference to ‘last week’ that this fabric was not from the fabric sale you told us about? I do hope you will post an “envy” shot – you know, one that will make us all wish we’d elbowed you out of the sale room and done a snatch and grab..
My sister tells me you got mostly wools – we got mostly cottons which suits this climate perfectly. I have not worn either of my knee length winter coats in Auckland once this winter – it’s been very mild.

What a lovely coat. I’m assuming it’s an early winter coat or is it heavy enough for a heavier colder winter (I guess in NZ, your winters are relatively milder except for the mountainous area ~ we have NZ friends). And a good coat must have a many good pockets. What did she find?

Gorgeous Melissa. And yes it was a cold snap – we even had snow up here on the kaimai ranges.
Found your site after reading Your Home and Garden – completely inspired me. I have set up a dedicated craft area (was a home office but who needs to photocopy???).
    Love your stuff,

Oh you are such an enabler! Good on you for going back again – I was sorely tempted but the thought of how much fabric that woman took to her grave was really sobering. I couldn’t quite make a 3 day sale out of it but there are days when it’s heading up there.
Fast sewing on the coat – what a score, that wool is absolutely gorgeous and I bet you paid all of $4 for it or something else ridiculous.
How discreet of you to keep that bit of gloating out of your blog!

The coat! Matched/mis-matched material is adorable. I love that it is a-symmetrical (spelling?). I also like seeing the things that you are reading and listening to. It’s like having a little conversation on a short train ride.

It is a gorgeous coat, it looks very soft-warm and comfortable which at the moment is a good thing. I am intrigued by the fabric sale comments from Mary-Nanna and tried to find reference to it in your posts and couldn’t. I am always interested in a fabric sale but probably that ship has sailed. Love the blog

my kids seemed to love the movie, sadly i think theyre rather desensitised to scary things and arlo even asked um, is that supposed to be a monster? when the giant rat came along. i was scared though!
