The holidays are pretty great but I do feel as though an awful lot of food has been made and consumed… growing kids and their friends tend to do that, don't they?

A favourite new thing we have been making and eating these holidays are these savoury pinwheel pastries. They are super-easy and quick to make, contain no special ingredients and get wolfed down very quickly around these parts. Especially with cheese and marmite/vegemite filling, which I realise is not to everyone's taste. Especially if you weren't born in the Antipodes. You could always put some chopped veges, or pizza-type fillings inside them if you'd rather.

Cheesy pinwheels

You'll need:

– 1 cup plain flour

– 3/4 cup wholemeal flour

– 1 1/2 tsps baking powder

– 1/2 tsp salt

– 50 grams butter, cut into small pieces

– 1/2 cup milk

– Something to put inside your pinwheels (marmite perhaps?) plus a good handful of grated cheese. Otherwise you could try finely chopped onion and tomato with crumbled feta cheese, or pesto and cheese, or anything else you can dream up.

Sift all the dry ingredients together into a bowl. Add the chopped butter and cut it in with a pastry cutter or your fingers, until breadcrumb-size. (Or you could make the entire dough in your food processor.)

Stir in the milk and knead on a floured surface until you have a nice dough. Roll the dough into a long rectangle, spread thinly with marmite (if you like it) then sprinkle your grated cheese over. Roll the rectangle length-wise and cut into pieces about 1-2" wide. Place cut-side up on a tray lined with baking paper, and bake at 200 degrees Celcius for about 10-15 minutes or until golden.

We make these pizza style. Spread tomato paste, a bit of ham or salami (or both), sometimes some corn, sometimes some capsicum, and a good handful of tasty cheese.
    Roll, slice, cook, devour!!
I like the holidays for cooking, but I DO get fed up with the tidy up and mountains of dishes that it generates.
    Enjoy your holidays.

I’m a bit excited about this post. My husband was a pastry chef (once upon a time) in Perth, so I’m hoping he knows about these. Vegemite is very difficult to find here in the States, and although I don’t care for the taste myself, my husband misses it greatly. We will have to give some of the other ingredients a try. Thank you for the wonderful ideas!

I see Alison has beaten me to recommending pizza sauce (I quite like the Leggos stuff that comes in the twin pottles) with ham and lashings of cheese. They disappear very quickly!

Oh, they are salty! I first thought it’s something sweet because I’m used to cakes similar shape which are filled with nuts. 🙂

Perfect for salty cravings! (I get them more often than sweet cravings)
Its quite hard to find new and innovative savoury snacks that don’t demand you be in the kitchen a lot of time, thanks =)

I made something very similar recently with some leftover bread dough. Filled with butter, vegemite and grated cheese it was a big hit in our house. Often I do a butter, sugar and cinnamon filling also.

this is such a good idea–my kids would love these. on the pizza theme, we used to go to a restaurant in our old town that served something similar with cheese and “buffalo sauce” (A spicy kind of sauce, like what they put on chicken wings sometimes) layered in, then marinara to dip. I’m sure they were wildly unhealthly, but I still have very fond memories 🙂
