I was inspired by our ferny garden to do some illustrations on the last of my plain white ceramicware. These pieces are from my hometown- the op-shops there seemed to be brimming with great ceramics, but I haven't had so much luck here. But there are some great second-hand shops here – they just have other things in them. 🙂

The kids have re-discovered their deep love for the songs of FatCat and FishFace, who are Wellington locals. They especially enjoy The Wreck of the Diddley, which allegedly happened not far from our house, and My Mother's Locked Out of the House, for obvious reasons.

When we're having a break from kids' songs, I love listening to this Wilco Tiny Desk Concert on NPR.

Enjoy your weekend, friends!

Hi Melissa. Try the recycle/tip shop at the Happy Valley tip in Wellington. I was there last weekend and they had lots of white ceramic cups. Hope you are enjoying Wellington life. Maybe we will see you a the next Craft 2.0? Cheers, Sarah :o)

I have SO been meaning to do this exact thing! I lack a steady hand though, and am afraid of botching the project.

love your ferns. I can never tire of how they unfurl into greeny perfection each year. Looking out at a newly snowed garden and, sure enough, the ferns are there – covered but waiting for the moment to do their thing 🙂

Have you ever tried eating the fiddleheads in early spring? Soak and wash them carefully, brushing off any of the brownish bits, steam them well, serve with salt and pepper and a bit of vinegar or lemon juice.
Ferns are just gorgeous and I love how you have captured them here.

I recently bought the porcelain pens so now I just need to find some pieces to try it out on. I like the ferns.
    Have a nice weekend.

What a fantastic idea – at first I thought they were the inspiration for your embroidery, and then I read the post and realised that you’d decorated them yourself. They’re beautiful. Just one question – what’s an op-shop?

Hey Melissa – have you been to the City & Sea museum on the waterfront? Great place to take kids on a rainy day and they have a little animated movie of the The Wreck of the Diddley which you can sit in a wee row boat and watch.
