We are going away for a week – just K and I. My brother is getting married on this tropical island and K is going to be a flowergirl, so we're dusting off the passports and flying out tomorrow.

Her older brother is flying away too, on his first unaccompanied trip, which he is very excited and proud about. He will visit his grandparents in the South Island. And poor Tom will stay in the city to work.

I made us all some new bags to take on the planes with us- I figured I'd need something roomy to schlep books, pens, snacks, etc with us all the way to another country. The kids are quite keen on taking their own stuff these days which is great, so I sewed them up these little messenger bags. They're made from sturdy denim, and they chose the flap fabric themselves- K's is a happy cotton print and A's is a robot-print linen from Japan. He has already filled his up with many books, his pocket money and enough comic-drawing supplies to last a week.

So i'll be having a week-long blog break while I visit my first Pacific Island- but will be sure to report back next week, hopefully with tales of swimming, snorkelling and cocktails. Have a great week yourself!

Fantastic! I went to Rarotonga recently with the family and have one very good piece of advice. Sunscreen: lots of it, all the time. I got lazy one day because it was overcast and received the most disgusting painful sunburn of my life that’s left me scarred with creepy shoulder freckles.

Ooooooooooh enjoy πŸ™‚ Rarotonga is magical. I’m sure you are taking your pens and paper the flowers are just stunning and it is the only place i have seen a Basil hedge!!! and the fresh fish at the market and piles of produce Mmmmmmmmmmm!
don’t forget your insect repellant? sometimes the mosquitoes can be annoying we just use citronella oil and eucalyptus oil mixed with sweet almond oil(you can use anything as a carrier oil!)
    have fun xxx

Wow, is A flying unaccompanied? Amazing, I didn’t know such things were possible nowadays, it sounds so romantic. Would love to hear more details of how one sends a small(ish) child alone, if you fancy elaborating.

thank you for that very good piece of advice. i had considered leaving the sunscreen here (!) because i was afraid it might leak through my bag. so i went out and bought a new bottle with sealed lid. thank you emma!

i think children have to be 5 years or older here in nz. i don’t know if it’s possible in other countries. you just book them the ticket and then you get a form in the mail to fill out with all the information, i.e. who will be collecting them at the other end. it is a great service- the kind steward looks after them until they are collected.

We went to Rarotonga for our 10th wedding anniversary a couple of years back. A nice, laidback kinda place which was just the ticket. I even chanced upon a tivaevae quilt exhibition in a local church hall, and got to have a chat to the lovely ladies who made them. It was very nice having cocktails delivered to my beach lounger by our resort staff as well!

Have a lovely time and take lots of photos. My kids have been across the Tasman as unaccompanied children and had a great time. The staff did a terrific job and the kids felt so independent.

Hope you’re all having a wonderful time (hopefully Tom will at least enjoy a week of quiet, even if he has to work.)
