This is a little crystals pouch I made for Tom's cousin, who turned 11 this weekend. She is really into crystals and gemstones, as are my kids, so A and K chose her a few and we made a little safekeeping pouch for them from silk. This silk was printed with the end-of-a-pencil eraser and some yellow ink. A wooden button and ribbon fastens the pouch, and it's lined in brown gingham for strength.

I like that the kids are so into gems because when I was little I found them fascinating. Also, fossils and rocks and shells from faraway places. It's strange how when we get older, we have to try harder to find the magic in these things. Well, I do, anyway.

Do you know The Magnetic Fields? The first song I heard by them was this quirky and amazing one, and then I discovered I Don't Want To Get Over You.

i recently found my old bag of gemstones when moving house – i mostly collected them as a teen when i was interested in paganism. those days.
the magnetic fields are brilliant! i would so love to see them live but they didn’t come to scotland on their last uk tour, sigh.

I never got into minerals/gems/fossils as a kid, but having recently married a geologist, I’m quickly learning about it all. Suddenly there are fossils and minerals on every spare shelf in the house…

I loved gemstones when I was a kid too! I remember I had one of those great old ‘how and why’ book about them (though it was not so old at the time!). I picked up some lovely stones when I was in Scandinavia last year, just on bush walks, and bought a little suede pouch for them in Germany…so, still love stones!

oh yes the magic of gem stones! A little bag to keep them in too, perfect. My sister and I often begged our mum to take us to the local gemstone shows where we would buy some stones to add to our collection, oh the excitement.

When I was a child I had quite the little collection of gems and even sparkly rocks I found on the playground. Even now, I have a geode slice necklace that I absolutely love… I think I’ll always have that childhood soft spot for them 🙂

I’ve been lucky enough to be involved in the development of our museum’s new Earth Gallery, featuring our stunning collection of minerals. Of course I would be thrilled to give you and your family a tour, if ever you find yourself in my neck of the woods…

What a great gift. My Dad is a surveyor, he’s always collected rocks, I have fond memories of looking at all his finds. We went to visit him recently and he had a big bowl full of gems to show the kids and let them choose some as gifts. They were fascinated and spent ages looking at them and running their fingers through them. : )

My son loved rocks and crystals and now his sisters are following suit. I still see the magic myself and seem to gather rocks every time I’m on the beach (which fortunately for me is several times a year). If you would like some small treasures from a faraway beach, let me know and I can send you some from Cape Cod, Massachusetts (Provincetown, the very tip and the first landing site of the Pilgrims from England).
