Just wanted to share these two lovely second-hand finds of mine.

The ceramic dish will hold my hair clips or something similar. It's a Johnson Brothers pattern with the finest pinky sea shells and coral.

And a weighty tome: Plants and Animals, published 1974 in Prague. I'll scan some pictures in soon. I know you'll like them.

For some very beautiful botanical painting click on this: White Clover by Yasuko Enjyoji.

Romance of the Sea! What a deal! I am currently working on a watercolor of the Princes’ Islands in the Marmara Sea, from where I recently returned. You likely see the water all the time, huh? Lucky you.

Oh my goodness, the underside of that plate is almost better than the top side! x Helen x

What wonderful finds! There is something magical about older guides to nature that seem lacking in ones with photos; it’s somehow more like a storybook than a factual guide to nature. I have a Victorian guide to birds and though its words are staid (and occasionally florid), there are some sections of wonderful prose – but the best bit are the engravings of the birds. How they manage to get such detail into such a small engraving, I do not know, but it’s a favourite despite its fusty smell and foxed pages!
The dish is just lovely. I often think that they had more style and panache when designing ceramics then than they do now. I am a particular fan of the Crown Devon ‘Stockholm’ range and have a few (but not enough!) pieces of that. Unfortunately, everything is in storage!
P.s. I popped over to say that I still read after all these years, but I fell into a rut of not commenting, which I am trying to overcome!
    Have a nice week!

I love the dish. I must make an effort to restart op shopping. There is not enough time now that I’m working.

I like the name dfor the china pattern, Romand Of The Sea. Very evocative. Oh, and the photo in your header?! Beautiful! It reminds me of the German Romantic painters.
