Books

Here are some things I bought second-hand lately. I always love to see other peoples' opshop finds, so every now and then try to remember to share mine.

The first is a simple blue linen dress with nice big side pockets. I found this for a few dollars and it needed a tiny bit of mending. I'm thrilled because there's nothing I like more than a linen dress for the warmer weather. Though I've been wearing it already with tights, boots, knitted cardigans, scarf, hat, … you get the idea. It's midwinter.

Last week I went to an opshop with the kids. They don't really like looking around (okay, they pretty much refuse to do it) but they do like to hang out in the book section and see if there's anything to read. When I went to collect them, I found these beautiful old children's books, 1950's editions. I will send them off to friends with new babies. Or… keep them for my grandchildren. Is it too early to be thinking like that?

Great finds, Melissa! It has been a while since I went on a “treasure hunt” and I do miss that!

Beautiful finds, my kids have developed a severe dislike of opshops lately too. I recently found a couple of old Beatrix Potter books too, I love the inscriptions in them. Gifts from parents and grandparents, I do hope people still gift books!

Isn’t it funny how our children often do their best not to be ‘just like’ us? Hence your children not liking to rummage around the charity shops. (It’s trendy, don’t they know?!) I like cooking yet my daughter eats limited foods and does not craft as I do. She does have some appreciation for them but not on merit, just the end result. Where we do bond and always have is over reading and our love of books. It’s enough! She is grown up now and has a literature masters, but it all began with those children’s books we used to share together. Wonderful times we did have. I still buy children’s books if I am especially drawn. Sometimes for nostalgic reasons but sometimes just because. I may keep them, or I may pass them on…
I just got round to looking up ‘op shop’ in the dictionary – we just call them charity shops in the uk. It means opportunity shop I find. Finally I know!

The op-shop fairies where good to you. I dropped off a big bag today and resisted bringing more children books home. I adore Beatrix Potter.
