Nicola 2

My friend Nicola is a clever woman: she makes beautiful food and writes about it over on her blog Homegrown Kitchen.

Her latest project is the 2015 food calendar. Printed on lovely thick paper, every month features a seasonal recipe, as well space for kitchen and garden notes (I love this feature.) Recipes I'll try immediately include the sourdough thin-crust pizza, plum and hazelnut cake and three-cheese quiche. Oh okay, I'll have to make all of the recipes.

The calendar even has an extra month (Dec 2014) with a recipe that is perfect for Christmas gifts: handmade salted caramels. Yes. I will be making and eating these. (You can also watch a sweet video about them.)

I reckon this calendar would make a perfect Christmas/end of year gift and it's only $20- you can order your own copy here

Nicola kindly offers one to give away to you. To enter, just leave a comment on this post, telling us what you're cooking for dinner these days. International entries welcome.

I’m a Brazilian that is becoming more kiwi every day, so we’ll have lots of black beans and pork garnished with rice and freshly chopped oranges but also with stir fried silverbeet for a kiwi touch! Thanks for this marvellous giveaway!

I haven’t been doing much cooking lately for various reasons. I was about to start something last night when a friend rang and invited me round to watch the sun set, and we had cheese on toast. So an inspiring calendar would be a good thing.

Our autumn garden in Vermont is slowing down. We are enjoying our own beets and carrots…cut up and sprinkled with olive oil and fresh rosemary…and roasted in a slow oven. We’ll probably pick and sautee the last of the rainbow chard, as the nights are getting close to a hard frost.

Unfortunately I haven’t been cooking much of anything lately but with the weather improving I’m getting my appetite and enjoyment of food back so I’m looking forward to trying some new recipies and going back to a few favourites. I’m especially looking forward to fresh crunchy veggies

We are enjoying the new season’s produce from our garden. Lots of fresh asparagus, potatoes, peas and beans with lovely bunches of fresh herbs. Also lots of fresh salads, which is not really cooking I know. As we have a good supply of eggs at present we are eating quiches and frittatas. We have a keen fisherman as a neighbour so we are also luck enough to have fresh fish regularly.

It’s Thanksgiving tonight in Canada and I made a turkey, squash, stuffing, gravy, and pumpkin pie with whip cream. Just like my mom used to make it. I also made cranberry relish which is just a package of cranberries, one whole orange and sugar to taste in the food processor, no cooking needed. So Thankfuwwwwwal.

I can easily say that it is rare a week in beautiful sunshiny autumn goes by without a bit of baking in our kitchen. A savory pie is divine to secret moments. Especially Spinach Börek is definitely a nation-wide most loved one. It can be a whole meal early in the morning for breakfast, for lunch, for afternoon tea time, or for dinner served with ayran (yogurt beverage), but most of the time with tea. At home we love making the phyllo dough (seven) sheets with the long rolling pin (oklava as we call in turkish). Fresh spinach, white cheese, eggs, milk,..
Simple, handmade and straight from our own oven.
Lovely week wishes from Istanbul, Turquie.

I’m such an “asparagus pig” so asparagus with everything at the moment. Simply steamed, grilled, stir fried, in risotto… oh, and I shouldn’t forget tempura. When I’m lucky enough to get really fresh ones, thinly shaved in salad, too!
It would be nice if they didn’t have the “smell” afterward, though.

On the other side of the world, autumn is here, it is time for long walks in the Canadian forest among the colourful leaves. Food is all about squash, roasts and stews. Yesterday for Thanksgiving diner we had a butternut soup, with a pork, celery and carrots stew (inspired from Bill Granger’s Easy recipes, that I carried all the way from New Zealand:) and some roasted potatoes. Dessert was apple crumble with maple sirup. Would love to get this calendar, thank you Melissa and Nicola!
