Dress 1

I found a few treasures at a recent Fabricabrac I attended with Constança and Nikki – we had such a lot of fun rummaging through the buttons and fabrics. 

Anyway, I made a dress from one of the pieces I bought, which is chocolate brown rayon-cotton with a small floral print. I used the 'Esme' pattern from Lotta Jansdotter's Everyday Style book, because I love the first one I made and wear it to work all the time.

The same modifications were made to this dress as last time – I sewed the neckline facings by hand, and lengthened both the hem and sleeves a bit.

And I also wanted to put some glorious sunshine on this page… enter wildflowers picked from the side of the road near our house (in mid-winter..?!) and another pair of these (everyone in the family wants some) for which I'm using two strands of yarn at once for maximum warmth and happiness.

    What a great use of fabric, Melissa! I’ve borrowed Lotta’s book from the library for the second time and I’m putting the book on my Christmas wish list for sure. I’ve yet to make something from it but when I do, this dress will be it! I live the overall feel of the book, the fact that the women featured are all different ages and body types and all the beautiful photos and fabrics, of course.
    I had such a good time attending Fabricabrac with you and Nikki – how I wish I lived in Wellington so we could meet more often!

    I know this post is a couple of years old, but I wondered if you could explain why you would hand sew the facings?? I am still a fairly new sewer and am trying to understand the benefits / reasons. Thank you 🙂

    hi nicola,
    i hand-sewed my facings because i wanted to be sure they would sit nice and flat around the neckline (sometimes its hard to achieve that on a machine, when youre sewing a curved edge.) but i would say i am extra fussy about these things! if youre careful, you should be able to achieve it with your machine without too many problems.
